SPEAK UP;;
I CAN'T HEAR//HELP YOU

---

This was originally going to be a photo essay, but this image ended up being a stand-alone.

I had to kick myself to upload it.

I'll continue it later.

It's hard to talk sometimes.
But if you or a friend needs help,
Don't be afraid to ask for it.

Edit: Thank you for the DD! The statistic was taken from RAINN.org, which can be viewed here: [link]

" Silent Victims. by ~musicangel071 contains a potent and profound message that should be recognized by all.
As this was posted in 2008, the percentage might not be entirely accurate, but it's true that a high percentage of people who have been sexually assaulted have not been reported. " -3wyl ( Suggested by 3wyl and Featured by PurpelBlur )

How do you know that they happened then? I'm just curious, it seems like it would be difficult to get this information. That said, even if sexual assaults were reduced to one per year, that would probably be one too many.

They mean they aren't reported when they happen.
Women come forward years later and confess to being sexually harrassed. But only 4 women out of 10 actually reported being sexually mistreated.

or 40 women out of 100.

Oh. I see. I wonder why this particular crime is not immediately reported? robbery and vandalism are reported much faster. Maybe it would be different if there was such a thing as rape insurance.

I think it's because they're ashamed. It's hard to explain, but once you get it, it's pretty understandable.

A real pity. Hopefully one day rape victims will not have any more shame than victims of mugging or hacking.

It's especially sad when a person's own parents do not believe them. It never happened to me, but I have read about people it has happened to.

Then FUCKING report it!!!!!! Bring justice to your situation!!!! Stand up for yourself!!! You couldn't stand up for yourself when you were being raped, but now you have the opportunity to stand up for yourself, and what the fuck is the reasoning behind NOT REPORTING A RAPE?

Yes, I may be making you feel worse, but if that feeling pushes you to speak up to someone you trust (ie the police, your family, a trusted friend) then Hell, I'll continue on with this rant!!!!

Report!!! Report! Report! It's fucking SILLY not to. And the longer you wait, the worse of a situation it becomes. Just report the bastard or bastards if there were more than one.

[Trigger warning: Rape, violence]
But you know, what's so fucked up is that often times the police are not on the women's side. Not only speaking of situations were a white straight female virgin walked a dark alley at night an her rapists jumped out of the bushes... that's how we picture sexual assault. Even in that case it is hard to convince anyone the victim wasn't "asking for it", which is because of internalized misoyny, i.e. victim-blaming, slut-shaming etc.
But society teaches that the crime is somehow less of a crime if sexual assault happens to people of color, trans-people, gay people, in the broad daylight.
It happens on the street, parking lots, at work, college, every minute, every single minute if everyday and it is comitted by strangers, but more often by acquaintances, partners or even family members.
Be it forced sexual intercourse, sexual harrassment, boob-touching, ass-grabbing, molesting, stalking... ugh
Every minute if everyday
And the police? The courts? How many rapists get a proper punishment? How many spend one day in jail?
Not a lot.

I completely agree. Most of the time, IF the cops are on the womans side, nothing gets done about it. Only 2% of all rapists actually go to jail.

You know the police aren't always on the woman's side. They even outright deny them rape kits sometimes. It's not always that easy.

Um, several...like maybe it happened to a child and that child was too scared or didn't know what to do, or maybe that child told an adult and that adult just hid it from anyone else.

I'm a victim that never spoke up.
But that's because nobody would listen.
Your message is touching and powerful.

I hope someday you find the justice you deserve. :)
I listen to anybody who is a victim, even if what they say doesn't make sense or anything else. A victim is a victim, and they deserve support and understanding. :)

But can you add under the photo description to which country this statistic belongs? Because as you know this figure changes cross-borderly and it sure is even HIGHER in underdeveloped countries :/
THANK YOU for spreading the message... We need more photographers like you.

thats not very supriseing, I've known many victems of rape in my life. and non of them ever want to go to the cops about it. or tell anyone for that matter.
sadley most victems keep it locked inside them, not wanting anyone to know about it at all.

Many people do. But it is psychologically unhealthy to keep this kind of thing under wraps, and the culprit can never be punished as they should be.

Participate with your art. Can be a picture o photomanipulation and it will be added to the video I'm working on. The art should have your personal signature on one corner or so people can know that piece of art is yours. This video will be presented in a public venue in Portsmouth supporting the international day against women's violence.
Or if you have no time and you have a picture for your gallery or want to take one I can edit it or get someone to do it. The thing here is to gather our talents and do something for it.
If the picture is edited by someone else I'll specify it on the picture. So there won't be a problem.

What do you think??
Looking forward to hear from you xx
